In April 2009, the California Department of Health Services participated in and witnessed the validation testing of OnSite Sterilization’s equipment, the VariClaveŽ VC250, as installed in a facility in Fresno, California. The VariClaveŽ successfully passed the validation testing of bagged regulated medical waste, sharps, and suction canisters, all with a 6log10 reduction of spores utilizing OnSite’s standard operating protocol.
In previous tests witnessed by the California Department of Health Services, each suction canister remained intact after the treatment cycle. The Department was told by the autoclave manufacture that suction canisters are designed to be airtight and, therefore, could not be destroyed during the process of a medical waste autoclave. However, during the validation testing of OnSite’s VariClaveŽ on the Suction Canister cycle, it not only broke the airtight seal, but also destroyed the canister and efficaciously sterilized the contents.
Because of the tests performed at the Fresno facility, the California Department of Health Services asked OnSite to allow them to include in their own training presentations, the results from the validation tests, especially the pictures, before and after, of the processed suction canisters. OnSite was, of course, happy to oblige.
A few months ago, the California Department of Health Services participated in and witnessed the validation testing of an unnamed hospital’s two regulated medical waste autoclaves from an unnamed manufacturer. As expected, the equipment did not meet the required standard of efficacy for suction canisters. But, unexpectedly, the equipment also failed to achieve the proper sterilization results for the other components of the regulated medical waste stream, i.e. red bag waste and sharps containers. The two units, rated by the manufacturer to process one thousand pounds an hour, now are limited to a load capacity of 400lbs per cycle. This experience has prompted the California Department of Health Services to require more rigorous testing as part of the validation protocol.
OnSite is proud to say the VariClaveŽ met the Department’s heightened standards using only its standard protocol, and is, once again, “Making Waves” in the medical waste industry.
